General information on compulsory health insurance:

Since 2009/01/01, compulsory health insurance in Germany applies to all persons, regardless of the occupation or group of persons.

The basis of the regulation on compulsory health insurance is the allocation to the respective health insurance system. For persons without insurance, this assignment is made on the basis of their last affiliation with the GKV (statutory health insurance) or PKV (private health insurance). Therefore, if you were last a member of the private health insurance system, you are required to take out private health insurance.

If you have never been a member of a health insurance fund, you will be insured in the fund to which you are assigned on the basis of your profession. This also applies to pensioners and students. After the compulsory health insurance for self-employed persons, freelancers and civil servants, these professions are assigned to the private health insurance, for example.
